– Sister released on bail
The police have finally arrested the man who was driving the vehicle that struck down 78-year-old Eileen August some two weeks ago.
The driver failed to take the elderly woman to hospital after the accident. According to a relative, the driver who was in the interior was arrested yesterday morning. The driver is at present detained at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost, for further questioning.
The relative explained that the 32-year-old man was waiting to be taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital for an identification parade since the victim is still hospitalised.
The driver’s 21-year-old sister, who is the owner of the silver gray station wagon, was also arrested for questioning; the woman was subsequently released on self-bail yesterday.
The driver’s mother was also detained and released on $10,000 station bail.
Kaieteur News understands that the sister and the man’s mother have both admitted to the police that they were passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
A relative had told Kaieteur News that the driver had dropped his sister off at a city funeral home and took Mrs. August to the Bourda Market before dropping her home.
Kaieteur News understands that police tracked down the car after making checks at the funeral home where August said that she was taken after the accident happened.
The names of the suspects were later narrowed down and the driver’s mother and sister were taken into custody.
The car was reportedly found at the suspect’s home at Parfait Harmonie.
Mrs. August had told this newspaper that she was on her way to Bourda Market when the driver struck her down from behind.
She sustained a broken leg along with abrasions to the body.
Despite her injuries, Mrs. August alleged that the driver took her to the market and then to a city funeral home, where a funeral service was reportedly being held for his grandmother.
After that, the driver allegedly took Mrs. August home and placed her into her rocking chair, leaving her there until relatives found her days later.
Meanwhile this newspaper was told that Mrs. August’s condition is listed as stable, but the woman requires a series of surgeries to repair a broken femur.
The woman’s right leg also has a series of metal attachments, which would help stabilize the foot.
