GCC squeeze past Old Fort

In the final match of the 2009 Farfan & Mendes First Division Men’s League, GCC duplicated their first round performance by edging Old Fort 2-1.
Although Hikers have already secured enough points to lift the trophy, the battle between GCC and Old Fort was not short of entertaining as the long-standing rivalry left reputations at stake.
After a bit of a scramble in the opening five minutes, GCC settled into a smooth passing game, driving their attack consistently down the right flank. The tough Old Fort defence was eventually breached in the 18th minute, when Alan Fernandes pounced on a loose ball in the circle to flick home the opener.
The other Fernandes on show, Philip increased GCC’s advantage just five minutes later with a clinically placed penalty corner strike.
While GCC came out looking in control at the start of the second half, Old Fort’s relentless assault in the GCC goal area eventually took its toll, as the homesters seemed to have lost their momentum.
Jason DeSantos made the Bourda boys pay for their slack play, after he received a through pass on the right wing and at full speed let fly a blistering shot from the narrowest of angles, catching GCC’s goalkeeper Michael Xavier asleep between the uprights.
The goal seemed to add to their determination, but GCC were equal to the task and despite end-to-end action no additional goals were scored before the final whistle came, handing GCC a well deserved win.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Hockey Board congratulated Hikers as league winners and will be planning an exhibition game and trophy presentation shortly.
