The highpoint of the VIP launch of the 2009 Accolade Music Awards of Guyana was the unveiling of the nominations at the Regency Hotel and according to it, Fojo and Shelly G received the greatest number of nominations—11.
Due to circumstances that warranted her appearance elsewhere, Shelly G was absent at the launch. Fojo was visibly ecstatic about his nominations for his reggae single “Love ‘til de end” and his album “My style, My Flo”.
The launch brought together industry representatives, corporate sponsors, musicians and the media to be the first in the know of the elaborate plans for the 2009 Awards. The release of the roll by Accolade Nominations Panel will allow the public greater familiarisation of the categories to which their artistes were assigned and those with whom they are in competition.
Burchmore Simon, co-ordinator of the nominations panel, said that although there were some glitches at last year’s Accolades Awards, it was a total success.
This year is no different, he admitted some of the artistes did not follow the requirements for registration in order to be on the nomination list. However, he said that this year’s event will be successful and better.
The Accolade team emphasised the importance for the public’s involvement which is critical to the success of the event and so encouraged enthusiasm and support.
The launch’s aim was for the public to become adequately familiar with the nominees before website and SMS text voting commences on September 1. The entire voting process will be supervised and managed by a reputable audit firm.
The nomination roll includes 40 categories covering the period January 1, 2007 to June 30, 2009. Local Disc Jockeys, Media Entertainment Personalities, Music Producers/Recording Studios, Record Bars and the public participation at large will also feature prominently in the various tiers of voting to determine the winners who will be known and announced for the first time at the Awards Show.
The Accolades not only showcase various genres of music, it also highlights supportive components of music entertainment, such as media outlets that cover local showcases and Record Bars that promote local music, radio stations and personalities who go above and beyond to play local music, promoters and managers who work tirelessly to ensure local artistry is continually in motion.
