As Griffith, Munroe and George shine
A solid half-century from West Indies Under-19 selectee Trevon Griffith and incisive spin bowling from Untom Munroe and Kevin George spearheaded DCC to an 8-wicket win against GNIC at the DCC ground over the weekend in the Cellink Plus, Georgetown Cricket Association 2-day first division cricket competition.
The emphatic win propelled DCC into the semi-finals where they will clash with Everest for a place in the final. MSC and GNIC will compete in the other semi-final.
GNIC were dismissed for 100 with teenager Ranole Bourne (30), National Under-17 Skipper Dexter Solomon (20) and Collis Butts (15) reaching double figures.
Munroe bagged 5-21 while Chris Barnwell, who has been selected in the 30-man West Indies 3rd string team for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa next month, picked up 2-18.
DCC then declared at 184-9 giving them a lead of 84 with the left-handed Griffith leading the way with 59. National Keeper Derwin Christian supported with 58 as the versatile Bourne took 6-56 from 12 overs of leg-spin and got back up from Ken Alphonso who took 2-40.
GNIC were then bowled out for 145 in their 2nd innings despite 41 from Elton Baker and 29 from Shawn DeSouza (29). George took 4-10 while Griffith, one of 2 Guyanese named in the 20-man West Indies youth squad, had 3-13 with his part-time off-spin.
DCC, set 65 to win, began their innings just after lunch and reached 66-2 with Andrew Lyght Junior, the son of former Guyana and West Indies ‘B’ team opener Andrew Lyght, smashing a quick-fire 40. Barnwell made an unbeaten 24.
