Dear Editor,
Guyana is falling apart around us and many of the stalwarts who fought the PNC administrations are still present, but remain silent. They are few, including, Freddie Kissoon, Tacuma Ogunseye, Rupert Roopnarine, who made admissions Guyana is worse off. On the other hand, there is a deafening silence from the many who stayed the course during the 1980s unto 1992.
The Working People’s Alliance was among those notable voices who helped socialized people to see ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ in Guyana. Where are they today? I recalled Andaiye writing a letter to the media, a few years ago, “Not in my name” in relation to what was happening in Buxton.
A few days ago in the media this lady called on the region to speak out against what is happening in Haiti. If there are problems in Haiti, then the region should lend their voice and support. But the public is yet to hear Andaiye calling on the region to help Guyana. Even the recent revelations in the US Court on Roger Khan and government associations has not evoke a call from her, or a letter saying what is happening in Guyana is not in her name. Remember, this is a very prominent WPA member, political activist, and woman leader, who can influence public opinion and action.
Where are Jocelyn Dow, Karen De Souza, Moses Bhagwan, Wasir Mohamed, Errol Arthur, David Hinds, Rupert Roopnarine, Wanda Razack, Nigel Westmass, Sase Omo, and others?
Don’t they have any comment or condemnation for the madness happening around us? Where are the Catholic Standard, Malcolm Rodriques, Mike Mc Cormack, and other members of the Catholic/Jesuit Community?
Where is SN, who in its pre-1992 role, constantly criticised and editorialized on the PNC excesses, and outlined what should constitute a good society, thereby, helping the PPP to power? Today SN, on political militancy, is a shadow of its pre 1992 self.
Those named were very vocal, militant, and constant in their activisms against the PNC. What has happened to their sensitivities now; are they no longer affected, or have they lost all sense of moral judgment, forgotten the principles of good governance they made us believe were worthy of struggling for? These people remain public figures, active and earning. So why the silence or lukewarm? Could it be a case where these leaders want citizens to believe that there is no wrong under ‘free and fair elections’, or such wrongs are acceptable/understandable?
What we see happening today is not democracy. President Barack Obama has listed many ills of a society (of which Guyana falls in every category) and concluded that even if an election is sprinkle in, it does not make it democracy, it is tyranny.
It seems that in the quest for power, or ridding Guyana of the PNC, the principles people thought the named leaders held dear- which to some extent adverted the PNC development – no longer matter.
I say this, because what we have today is a sickening alternative that from all public accounts, are abusing the Treasury, associating with the narco/crimialised economy, engaging in extra-judicial murders and human rights abuses.
If these wrongs affect the conscience of the named individuals/organisations/ groups, or weren’t what they fought for, then they should speak out/protest and help to bring Guyana to a state of civilization and good governance for all.
The people deserve no less.
