Guyanese footballers tackle Netherlands Antilles tonight and must win by at least 3 goals if they are to win the four nation invitational tournament that also includes Suriname, French Guiana ant the Netherlands Antilles, currently underway in Suriname.
The local footballers scored a 2-2 draw against French Guiana in their inaugural game and replicated that performance against Suriname in their second game Sunday evening last. This time it was Diquan Van Cooten who scored Guyana’s lone goal midway into the second half. However, the local players’ dreams were shattered after Suriname equalized shortly afterwards, forcing the game into a stalemate.
In earlier matches played in the competition, French Guiana registered a 1-nil win over Netherlands Antilles while Suriname inflicted further pain on the Dutch team with a 3-1 drubbing.
The winners of the tournament would be decided today when Guyana oppose the Netherlands Antilles and Suriname face off with French Guiana. Both teams are on 4 points apiece while Guyana remains in the cellar with 2 points.
Guyana still stands a slim chance of carting off the honours but they must win their final encounter against the Netherlands Antilles by 3 clear goals while the match against Suriname and French Guiana has to end in a draw.
The footballers left Guyana last Wednesday and played their first game against French Guiana two days later. Before their departure they were encamped at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), Turkeyen ECD.
They were also involved in several practice matches against an U-18 side drawn from Camptown FC, a Conquerors U-17 side and an U-18 squad from the Buxton United FC. Sampson Gilbert is the coach with assistance from Devon Bissoon. Lindley Langhorne is the physiotherapist.
