Two rural constables are being questioned by the police in the wake of allegations by a Chateau Margot resident.
Rafeek Shakur, 35, of Lot 17 Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara, is claiming that he was chopped in the head several times by two rural constables whom he has named and identified.
The injured man said that his troubles began after he was released from prison recently. He said that on Saturday evening he returned home from a wedding and moved a piece of furniture in his home, much to the annoyance of his neighbour who lives in the lower flat.
He said that after he moved the furniture he and his neighbour had an exchange of words.
“We had a li’l exchange of words and my neighbour who is a Rasta went to the police station to make a report.”
The man said that half of an hour later his neighbour along with the two rural constables, one of them female, returned to his home.
“I looked through the window and saw the two rural constables and they ordered to me to come out of the house.” The injured man said that he complied.
“When I come downstairs these people just started to beat me like a child”. The man further alleged that the female rural constable took a cutlass which his neighbour had and dealt him several chops to the head and hand.
The man said that after he was chopped he was rendered defenceless and he briefly lost consciousness.
Shakur said that he regained consciousness and proceeded to run to the public road to get assistance.
He said that after reaching the public road he lost consciousness again, and never regained consciousness until the Sunday morning.
Shakur admitted to this newspaper that the two rural constables who are at the centre of the investigation are always in a habit of targeting him.
“These two people charge me last year for threatening language and I pleaded guilty and de magistrate give me two 60-day sentences.”
Shakur said that sentence ended recently and he was released from prison. The man said that since his release the two constables have been attacking him.
“They just looking for something that they could charge me with so I could go back to prison.”
Shakur has received medical attention and was taken yesterday afternoon to the Beteverwagting Police Station to give a statement.
Police sources have told this newspaper that senior police officials have ordered a full investigation into the allegations.
