Niall Roberts and Noelle Smith, just back from the FINA World Championship in Italy will headline Guyana’s 16-member team to the 15th Goodwill Swimming Championships set for Land of the Flying Fish, Barbados from August 14 16.
According to the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association, this is the first time that seventeen (17) swimmers achieved the qualifying times. “While this is a far way from the maximum team of forty (40), it is yet another step in the right direction,” the release noted. One of the swimmers pulled out due to personal reasons.
Like many of the other teams leaving these shores to compete overseas, funding was a challenge for GASA.
But the association noted that it is committed to ensuring that all of the swimmers, who have worked so hard, are able to travel. Some fund-raising have been held and some sponsors have chosen to support specific swimmers, but GASA said there is still a significant short-fall.
“We hope to have more positive responses to the over fifty (50) letters which have been distributed.”
Senior GASA Executive member Stephanie Fraser has been named the Manager/Chaperone for the team which will be coached by Nicholas Fraser whose assistant is, Christopher Mc Adam.
The swimmers named are (Male) Sheik Amir, Omali Dare, Travis Henry, Jaime Jabar, Desmond Long, Henk Lowe, Niall Roberts, Daniel Scott and Joseph Seguina. (Female) Steffi DeNobreiga, Nayira Freso, Athena Gaskin, Soroya Simmons, Noelle Smith, Stephen Soares and Britany van Lange.
The team will leave Guyana on Thursday.
Apart from the host nation, the Guyanese will compete against swimmers from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and ‘Guest team’ Grenada who were invited by Barbados as hosts.
The Goodwill Swim Meet 2009 will be held at the Aquatic Centre, Wildey, St Michael a 50M pool.
