Greaves wins feature, crowd impressed with 9-year-old Perez
By Franklin Wilson
The sun shone in all its glory for the most part and the cyclists were equally brilliant on the track when the Roraima Bikers Club in association with the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation brought off a successful cycling meet on Sunday last at Amelia’s Ward in the Bauxite Mining Town.
Close to 1000 spectators, by far the largest crowd to witness a local cycling event for quite some time, enjoyed every moment of the activity and braved the drenching sun to take in the action.
Alonzo Greaves took a liking to the Ward Circuit and took the feature 25-lap race in style ahead of junior rider Daniel Ramchurejee who has been in the pink of from since his return from the USA a few weeks ago.
Warren Mc Kay, who had been enjoying the better of Greaves in the recent past, had to settle for 3rd followed by Robin Persaud, Christopher Holder and Andrew Reece who was brought back by the organisers for this event.
The home crowd had come to witness Reece (based in Anguilla) at his best and even whipping the opposition but that was never to be as the locally based riders were too hot for Reece to handle.
Such was the dominance of Greaves and Ramchurejee that they took almost all the prime prizes save for Geron Williams who took only one.
Of the $29,000 that was up for grabs in primes, Greaves and Ramchurejee shared $28,000 equally.
A number businessmen and associates of the organisers contributed to the lucrative prime prizes.
Warren Mc Kay had earlier defeated Greaves and Persaud in the category 1&2 8-laps clash. Lindener, Mark Lewis took the category 3&4 (7laps) race beating into 2nd fellow Lindener Orville Hinds and Andrew Persaud.
Ramchurejee, in the first race of the day bettered his fellow junior and juvenile riders by more than 100m, a field that included both Holder and Williams. Rastaf O’Selmo and Michael Nelson placed second and third.
Tony Simon took the unknown distance race, Mc Kay and Greaves filling the other two spots in that order.
Also shining on the day was 9 year-old Raymond Perez who is undoubtedly the top BMX raider in his age group in Guyana. Perez won all three BMX races, the 6-9 (1lap), 9-12 (2laps) and a special one-lapper (9-12) where he allowed his rivals to start about 15 meters ahead of him and still came back to beat them handsomely to the delight of the crowd, many amazed at his talent and ability in handling the cycle at this tender age.
Female rider, Marcia Dick represented the Ancient County well by winning the female 3-lapper ahead of Hazine Barrett and Donna Wong. Dick, who will be representing Guyana at the Inter Guiana Games in October in Suriname, fell on the first lap but rebounded to whip the field.
Wong was not satisfied that Dick had what it takes to beat her and a one-lap grudge race was quickly organised which Dick went on to win, Wong fell a couple of meters into the race which put paid to her chances of providing any serious challenge to the confident Dick.
Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson won an exciting veteran 50 and under clash by outsprinting former national champion and Lindener Jolyn Joseph, Junior Niles settling for the third position. The 50 and over event went to Monty Parris who beat Ronald Wong and Walter Isaacs.
Olandio King won the 10-lap upright match up; Cliff Thompson and national middle distance star Kelvin Johnson following while the 6-lap event went to Clive Thomas, Kevin Edwards 2nd and Johnson 3rd.
The lone athletic race over a distance of 800m saw Johnson crossing the line first followed by Tyson Bentule and Daniel Giddings.
The organisers have expressed thanks to all the sponsors for their collective efforts which made the event a huge success among them, Western Union’s Bill Express, Bakewell, Church’s Chicken, Banks DIH, GT&T Cellink and Caribbean Airline.
