New Amsterdam, Berbice – Members of the Rotary Club of Felicity/Charlieville, out of Trinidad and Tobago, teamed up with their counterparts in New Amsterdam to render assistance to incapacitated persons.
Last Friday, five persons received wheelchairs in New Amsterdam and the distribution would continue until the stock is completed.
The beneficiaries were 77-year old, Dhanmattie Meyer, of Lot 45 Palmyra, Jogmani Darson, 78, of East Canje, 76-year old Rajkunri Ramdin of Canefield, 37-year old Rupan Naggasar of Gay Park, and Edwin DeVieira, 87, of Essex Street in New Amsterdam.
Over the weekend, the Trinidadian contingent distributed similar items in Georgetown and its environs.
Supersad indicated that his organisation assisted in raising some funds for the project but the Rotary Club of Forsythe in Georgia and the Rotary Headquarters also contributed.
This aspect falls under a US$120,000 project which began in 2008 in Trinidad and Tobago, where it was done on a monthly basis.
The team also rendered support in St. Kitts & Nevis, Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, and St. Lucia.
President of the Rotary Club of New Amsterdam, Dr. Ganesh Shivkumarshiva, indicated that 20 persons in Berbice received wheelchairs about six months ago. Each chair carries a US$600 price tag.
The project was also executed in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of New Amsterdam.
Rupan Naggasar said he suffered an inability to walk after an injury on February 4th, 2003. The father of two explained that he was cycling along the roadway when an unknown person struck him in the head with a piece of wood. The former employee of the Guyana Sugar Corporation expressed gratitude to the Rotary Clubs of New Amsterdam and Felicity/Charlieville.
It has been 20 years since Rajkunri Ramdin was unable to walk as a result of arthritis.
Dhanmattie Meyer claimed she was affected by an unknown ailment 10 years ago and lost mobility. Those in need of wheelchairs can contact the Secretary of the New Amsterdam Rotary Club, Rohan Marray, on telephone number 333-2751.
