Rose Hall Town, Corentyne – The Rose Hall Town Fire Station is to be handed over to the Guyana Fire Service next month.
The driving force behind the $12M venture is the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, which is based at Rose Hall Town on the Corentyne.
The venture is 95 percent complete and all that is left is the driveway to be casted and the gate erected.
President of the Chamber, Poonai Bhigroog said Government is expected to provide a fire tender.
The Chamber began training 15 volunteers in July and a similar batch will commence training soon.
Bhigroog is calling on persons within the Central Corentyne area to offer their service as volunteers.
As part of the bigger picture, the Chamber is hoping to have persons from all communities within the Central Corentyne area trained as fire fighting volunteers.
With time being an important factor in fire fighting, persons trained in each community will cut back on response time and buildings and lives could be saved in the event of an actual fire.
In East Berbice there are two fire stations; one is situated at New Amsterdam which is some 14 miles (22 kilometers) from Rose Hall Town while the other is at Corriverton which is 45 miles (73 kilometers) from New Amsterdam.
The Guyana Sugar Corporation plays a pivotal role in fire fighting in the Berbice area.
The Central Corentyne Chamber has invested a total of $2.5M on the current project. Of this amount, $2M came from the 2005 and 2008 Berbice Expo and Trade Fair activities.
The benevolence of well-wishers, including overseas based Guyanese businessman, Dave Balgobin, who handed over $1 million in 2008, also added up.
Mr. Poonai thanked all those who have assisted in any way towards making it possible to have the very first fire station in that area.
Consolidation work began in March last year on the 159 by 59 foot plot of land situated to the rear of the Rose Hall Police Outpost. The design for the fire station had to be modified as a result of rising costs and the Chamber’s determination to stick within the $15 million budget set for the project.
Against that backdrop, the design was tailored but the size of the building remained the same 37 by 45 feet.
