The Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) is appealing to residents to monitor the progress of works currently being carried out in various sections of the city.
Public Relations Officer of the city entity, Royston King, has announced that as part of works to be completed under the $120 M funding from the government, a team of engineers and technical officers has commenced enhancement projects in Tucville, Agricola and Cummings Lodge.
He said the team is working along with residents from the respective areas, who were recruited especially to assist the enhancement drive.
According to King, the recruits are responsible for scooping and grading of parapets, drainage works and other related activities.
And given the community-involvement nature of the projects, King said that the council is urging all citizens to co-operate with the efforts to sustain the improved conditions of the targeted communities.
“Also citizens could assist the municipality to monitor the progress of the works in these sections and give feedback to the council through its public relations department,” said King.
He noted, too, that citizens who have concerns or questions about the ongoing projects can contact the department on telephone number 225-2218 any working day of the week.
Two tranches, $10 M each, of the assured government funding have already been handed over to the municipality. The first tranche saw unemployed persons residing in the various target communities of Cummingsburg and Lacytown being hired to carry out works such as the manual clearing of parapets and the cleaning of drains.
The second tranche of the financial support was made available last month and according to Deputy City Engineer, Lloyd Alleyne, the money has already been put into use in various sections of the city.
However, he disclosed at a recent press conference that it has been observed that due to heavy rain falls there has been rapid growth of grass that had been cut during the works funded by first tranche. This development, he said, has since led to a decision being taken by the municipality to put in place measures to address the problem.
“Part of the agreement was that it was no use that the government spend this money to do the enhancement works and no maintenance is done after. As a result, in discussion with the city Engineer and the technical engineers on site, it was decided that from the persons we have recruited we would identify persons that we plan to take on for what we are calling a maintenance crew.”
According to Alleyne, the identification of the members of the crew was based on their performance as was relayed by reports received from their supervisors, including facts about their attendance and behaviour.
The maintenance crew according to Alleyne, should have commenced their operation in the last week of last month.
And even as the works under the government funding is in progress, the Public Relations Officer has disclosed that other municipal services would be delivered simultaneously. Among these he listed public health and environmental services, public health and civic education, law enforcement, engineering activities and the collection of taxes.
