West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon (74) and First-Class left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (4-35) led Albion to a 6-wicket victory against Rose Hall Canje at the Port Mourant ground on Saturday and a place in this Sunday’s final of the Tenelec Berbice 50 overs first division cricket competition.
Permaul, who celebrates his 20th birthday tomorrow, grabbed 4-35 as Canje fell for 166 in 44.4 overs despite a fluent 75 from Sasenarine Sukhdeo.
The 28-year-old Chattergoon, who played 4 Tests and 18 ODIs for the West Indies, stroked 5 fours and 2 sixes in his entertaining half-century as defending champions Albion reached 169-4 in 27 overs.
Sukhdeo got support from former Guyana Under-15 player Sanjay Khan (27) and Kevin Ramdeen (20) as the Canje combination slipped from a good position of 113-2 once Permaul, who has taken 54 wickets from 18 First-Class matches since his debut in 2007, was introduced on a slow track with some turn for the spinners.
Canje, who won the toss in sunny conditions, slipped to 17-2 before Sukhdeo and Khan joined forces to put together 96 for the 3rd wicket before Permaul removed Khan.
Permaul then picked up 3 wickets in 2 overs with the score on 121 as Canje slumped to 121-6.
Albion, who beat Young Warriors in the inaugural final, lost former Guyana 20/20 player Imran Khan (9) when he was bowled by Rafik Kassim at 21-1 before the left-handed Chattergoon, who has 5 tons from 68 First-Class matches, was joined by national Under-19 player Jonathon Foo.
The pair added 107 before the talented Foo, who disappointed in Jamaica in his last year at Regional youth level last month, was removed by Sukhdeo after hitting 3 boundaries in 44 to leave the score on 128-2.
Chattergoon was then trapped lbw to Sukhdeo at 134-3 before Ranga Lachigadu (2) was leg before to Khemraj Sumir 4 runs later.
Harrinarine Chattergoon and Sharmendra Hardyal then took the Corentyne line-up to victory as Sukhdeo ended a good match by taking 2-27 from 6.4 overs. (Sean Devers)
