The basketball stakeholder meeting scheduled for tomorrow at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall was plunged into jeopardy with the revelation that a basic procedural violation could result in a sub-association boycott of the event.
There seem to be a violation of procedure when it was alleged that the federation did not receive notice of an intention to invite its sub-associations to a meeting, Ian Andrews told Kaieteur Sport when contacted yesterday.
Andrews, who is the Secretary of the national federation in the absence of Maxine Parris-Aaron, said that the sports commission “should have contacted the federation and let the federation contact the sub-associations”.
The invitation letter was apparently given to Parris-Aaron in her assumed capacity as the Secretary but Andrews informed that “Parris Aaron resigned a long time ago”. The letter of invitation is different from the request.
Kaieteur Sport first reported that the meeting was happening and then raised questions as to the hierarchy of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation since the death of its head, the late retired Colonel Godwin McPherson.
Subsequently, another section of the print media rightly named the federation’s first vice- president, David Patterson for the top position. However, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar took umbrage to some parts of that article.
Kumar said that his call for a stakeholder meeting with the federations was merely in the interest of the development of the sport since the National Sports Commission had made significant investment toward its success.
Andrews said that because of the violation of that procedure, the federation is in a place where they can penalise sub-associations if they attend the meeting without the necessary permission from the basketball parent body.
“We can say to them that we don’t want to meet because of how they have ignored us and it is a case where we don’t want to be confrontational.
We want to help but we cannot be taken for granted,” Andrews told this newspaper.
He did not directly say whether or not the sub-associations will meet with the Kumar but what is known is that a debriefing session between basketball luminaries is scheduled for sometime prior to the Sports Commission meeting.
