I will reply to Peeping Tom because I know that unlike the anonymous bloggers, a significant percentage of the reading public is acquainted with that corner in the Kaieteur News. There is a particular Peeping Tom who is not strong in the intellectual realm. Some of his writings are so infantile that if his identity was known, he will suffer a crisis in his family and among friends.
One column argued that the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in the US is a ploy among the American ruling class to deceive people that the US is democratic country.
I replied supplying the historical factors that led to that legislation.
Against the background of the Vietnam War and Watergate, millions of Americans demonstrated for open, transparent government and got the FOIA. No serious organization in the US would be so foolish as to denounce the FOIA. Then in what can only be described as asininity, Peeping Tom argued that the Guyanese who are flocking to other countries in illegal entries are in fact running away from Guyana because the destruction of the economy that occurred under Burnham was so catastrophic that we are still feeling the effects.
Again, I replied. This is the 17th year of PPP rule, I showed where in Argentina and Ireland, the economy in those two countries were worse than anything Burnham created but buoyancy was achieved in less than five years. Hoyte of course jump-started the economy after 1988. How anyone can write such foolishness.
We come now to Peeping Tom last Sunday, titled, “Freddie Happy.” He locates my dissatisfaction with the Jagdeo Government in what took place with the third imposition of a Vice-Chancellor at UG in 2007. Long before 2007, I applied the term fascistization to the Jagdeo regime.
Many, many moons ago, before Mr. Jagdeo’s intervention at UG, I was warning the Guyanese people of the descent into authoritarianism. Surely, that particular Peeping Tom has to be so ignorant that he read nothing from me before 2007. Yet before 2007, I was doing a daily (not weekly, not monthly), yes a daily column in this newspaper in which analysis after analysis flowed about the undemocratic nature of the PPP Government.
In fact, one of my essays on the evil nature of the PPP caused me to be sued by Mr. Ralph Ramkarran in 2000. I hope Peeping Tom has the commonsense to know that 2000 is seven years before 2007. In 2000, the story of the imposed Vice-Chancellor had not begun.
I did this reply here so if there are PPP readers who thought the unnamed writer had a point, they could see the idiocy in this particular Peeping Tom. But I should go on for the benefit of these same PPP readers to show them how silly is this gentleman.
Who says I believe what the Government and the police tell the Guyanese nation? Who says I believe what the Government has put out on the fire at the Ministry of Health? Who says that the Guyanese people accept the Government’s version of events? Is this a Government to be trusted when it can’t tell us who the investor was of the failed hotel project in Kingston?
Is this a Government that is open with its citizens when we don’t know what happened to the $6B investment from the NIS? Is this a Government whose word you can respect when we don’t know who got their monies back when NBS bought out CLICO’s Berbice Bridge bonds?
I’ve got news for Peeping Tom. I don’t believe anything, I repeat, anything, the Government of Guyana puts out as explanations to the Guyanese people. This untrustworthy Government is about to have its rendezvous with destiny. Its nemesis is at its doorstep. The Roger Khan entanglement will cripple it.
Before I conclude two things need to be said. This Government should not be forgiven for what it did to David de Caires in withdrawing state advertisements from Stabroek News for eighteen months. De Caires was a good gentleman whose paper contributed enormously to the return of free elections.
Peeping Tom asked that since I knew who attempted to kill Peter Taylor, then why was I at his gate trying to talk to him. I went three times to see Taylor, and I never told anyone why I did. Who says it was to talk about the attempt on his life? I only told one person and that was someone I met on the seawall who doesn’t have a face and wore a mask. He said he lost his face in an accident and he now writes a column under an assumed name. Was that Peeping Tom?
