Guyana opened its quest for regional football honours in Suriname on Friday last with a drawn game against French Guiana when the curtains went up in the U-15, four nation, football tournament between the host nation, Guyana, Netherlands Antilles and French Guiana.
Reports coming out of Suriname states that French Guiana drew first blood with a scorcher but the situation was equalized after a French Guiana player deflected and mistakenly struck the ball in his own goal.
Guyana then went one up through a goal off the boot of striker Sherwyn Lewis to send his team into the lead at half time. Even before he left Guyana to participate in the tournament, Lewis’ coach, Sampson Gilbert had labeled him a mean player noted for his strong attacking ability. Lewis performance has vindicated his coach’s level of confidence.
The lead was, however, short-lived as the Frenchmen managed to tuck in a second goal moments before the final whistle to equalize the situation.
The Guyanese would be in action once again tonight and subsequently on Tuesday night as they attempt to procure national honours.
