Dear Editor,
Reference is made to Freddie Kissoon’s article “They have made Forbes Burnham look like a toy soldier” (Kaieteur News, 6 August, 2009).
Kissoon loves to remind readers Burnham denied him a job which in effect hurt his mother and lead to her demise. Again in this named article he tells readers Burnham “used his power to hurt me and in the end hurt my mom by trying to get at me. Burnham can go to hell as far as I am concerned.” Freddie’ oft repeated statement and emotions continue to leave out crucial aspects of the story that would offer readers a holistic understanding.
Here’s the side of the story Kissoon does not tell:
First, Kissoon needs to come clean and tell readers what was done at the University of Guyana under the Burnham administration that caused him to go to Canada to pursue post graduate education.
Second, why on Kissoon’s return to Guyana his academic credibility became the subject of scrutiny? There are many things said about Burnham, but even among his detractors Burnham was admired for his respect for intellectual honesty and crediting the authors he used in his speeches and presentations. Burnham also admired others who adhered to this intellectual tenet. This tenet is also applied by universities, academics, shrewd politicians, scholars, and lawyers, among others.
Third, during the 1983 U.S. invasion of Grenada, Kissoon was working for the Maurice Bishop administration. The invasion placed his life at risk. It was Forbes Burnham who provided transportation (Skyvan) for Guyanese to come home. Kissoon was not left on the island, however, much he despised Burnham. Burnham saw him foremost as a Guyanese and felt duty-bound to protect Guyanese wherever they were.
Now, if the missing links are joined, readers have an opportunity to understand the Burnham/Kissoon relationship and Kissoon’s epiphany or hatred for the man.
Over the years Kissoon has accused Burnham of many things without providing evidence Burnham was directly involved. Someone needs to ask Kissoon how does he think his students feel when he gives them low or failing scores in their assignments when they write positive things on Burnham.
