PUC to address ‘blackout’ situation

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) will be holding a public inquiry into the conditions and service of the utility company as it relates to the regular blackouts being experienced.
The forum is set for August 11, next.
Blackouts are as a result of the problems abounding the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL), the PUC stated in a release.
In a press statement issued yesterday, Chairman of the PUC, Justice Prem Persaud, said that the public forum will be held at the Tower Hotel on Main Street, Georgetown, from 17.00 hours and the public is invited.
Since the beginning of this year, GPL customers in Guyana have been experiencing a spate of power outages. GPL has given reasons of malfunctioning equipment.
In the case of customers on West Coast Demerara, Kaieteur News had reported that residents are getting ‘fed up’ with the situation.
According to residents, the situation is one which is getting ‘out of hand’ since they are now getting power outages for long hours, especially during the nights. It was noted that the situation was expected to ease during the month of May, but some residents noted that this does not look likely.
Chief Executive Officer of GPL, Bharat Dindyal, at a press conference, in May, had said the blackout situation on the West Coast will as two machines, a 5 Megawatt (MW) Niigata and a three megawatt Crossly Machine is expected to be back into operation at the Garden of Eden Power station.
