Dear Editor,
I have noticed that the usual political instigators are active now, since an election is soon around the corner. It is sad to see that they are still using the same nasty political gimmick to win support and to attain political power.
The past few days have seen attempts by a number of mischief makers to create political instability within our society. The deliberate act to create conflict, hostility and mayhem among our people has commenced, and Guyanese need to be alert and smart not to fall victims to their brainwashing game.
Political instability directly affects the accumulation of private investment which is linked to the performance of the institutional environment, and the performance of the economy. Political instability affects growth by hindering physical capital accumulation and may also affect growth indirectly through the returns of investment, or directly through total factor productivity.
In the past, Guyana has suffered disruption and political instability because of political mischief makers who try to create ethnic conflict among our people for political support. Guyanese must know, that political instability has economic costs attached to it, and it would certainly be disappointing for a few politicians just for political power to brainwash people into negativity, and to destroy years of economic achievements to a mere ephemeral flash which cannot be easily repeated.
Guyana is not yet developed and still requires the support from international financial lending agencies for financial security cushioning, fiscal discipline, and satisfactory economic policies in order to sustain macroeconomic stability; and this will attract international investors. The global financial crises have led Government to reduce the economy’s vulnerability to external financial shocks through continued economic reforms and fiscal consolidation. Guyana consists of six unique races and it is wrong when politicians and other leaders invoke “ethnic action” against the developmental and economic challenges of this country. Today, ethnicity is being used by political failures lacking tangible agenda for their country and for seeking political and economic power. Such failures have led them to run to the easy way out, which is to play up the race card game claiming that their race is suffering and is marginalised and this works with their psychology causing conflict among our people.
Unpatriotic leaders use ethnicity to organie people for political action pretentiously to defend ethnic interests, but instead, they are just thirsty for political power and will cause immense suffering to their people at any costs for their own selfish reasons. It will be safe to say that these political parties which are obsessed with their political party being based on ethnicity do not possess any good and workable fundamental ideology. We cannot wish ethnicity to disappear, but we can control it through education, good governance and justice and increased economic development.
Politicians and other leaders need to start uniting the people by creating a strong sense of nationhood and patriotism by their actions and utterances.
