– C/ships to be held on October 11
Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony (centre) chairs the Paralympic Steering Committee Meeting last Wednesday.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport was the venue for the launching of the Steering Committee which was formed to organise the upcoming Paralympic Championships billed for October 11 at the Castellani Pool and Carifesta Sports Complex respectively.
Sport Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, who presided over the meeting, announced that the Ministry will be spending nearly $1.8 million to host the championships which will see participants battle each over in swimming, athletics, football and table tennis.
According to Dr. Anthony, the whole purpose of setting up the Committee is to eventually establish an association which could then frame its own constitution and subsequently initiate interaction with the International Paralympic Committee.
In charge of the Committee is Wilton Spencer, while the other members are Stephanie Fraser, Dennis Hunte, Desryn Softleigh, Carl Brandon, Keith French, Lavern Fraser-Thomas and Anand Mangru.
Spencer in his remarks thanked the Minister for his Ministry’s support, adding that consultation between the thirteen organisations that caters for disabilities and the Minister will be held shortly.
The International Paralympic Committee is the international representative organisation of elite sports for athletes with disabilities.
It organises, supervises and co-ordinates the Paralympic Games and other multi-disability competitions.
It is an international non-profit organisation formed and run by 160 National Paralympic Committees and 5 disability specific international sports federations.
The IPC’s mission is to enable athletes with a disability to achieve sporting excellence and to inspire the world.
