Over $6.5M and six scooters on offer
With just over a week left to race day, preparations are moving apace for the staging of the Third Annual Guyana Cup horserace meet slated for Sunday August 16 at the Rising Sun Turf Club, West Coast Berbice.
The Guyana Cup, which is the biggest horserace meet on the horseracing calendar, has seen an enormous $6.5M in cash and prizes up for grabs for the respective winners on race day. Six motor scooters are also up for the taking and will be presented to the Champion Jockey, Champion Trainer, Champion Owner, and the winners in the ‘B’, Three Years and Two-years-old events. All compliments of the Jumbo Jet Auto sales.
The organizers are leaving no stones unturned and already massive multi million dollars renovation woks have been completed on the facilities.
The stands have been refurbished with toilet, bathroom and running water installed. The track has also been relayed and according to President of the Turf Club Mr. Inshanally Habibullah, the track is in excellent condition and should produce some very fast times when the big day comes. He said, at the moment final preparation works are being done to the entire facility and the track is being rolled and graded on a daily basis so as to maintain its sheen.
According to reports Entries are filling up at a rapid pace with just a few places left and with closing date being Sunday, horse owners are being asked to be on the double.
Eight races are carded for the day, including a number of feature events which will be highlighted by the clash of the champions in the B & Lower category over 1400m. The winner will run away with a massive one million dollars and the Banks DIH trophy with $500,000 going to the second place finisher. The third and fourth places will collect $250,000 and $125,000 respectively.
Three-year-old horses will also cover the 1400m distance for a winning purse of $600,000.
Horses contesting the E and lower 1400m event will compete for a first prize of $500,000. The 2-year-old open gallop will be contested over 1100m with the winner’s money set at $400,000.
Meanwhile, $200,000 will go to the winner of the ‘G’ and Lower and the ‘I’ and Lower winning stake will be $160,000 over 1100m.
The J and K division horses will have $140,000 as the winner’s purse while the L class horses will sprint over a distance of 1400m for a top prize of $100,000.
An entertainment package which will include a number of surprises are being worked out and according to co organizer Romel Jagroop details will be released shortly.
