Alisha Smith, a woman who was accused of stabbing her reputed husband Rishaba Dushaj on July 8, last walked away a free woman yesterday after the matter was discharged.
Smith had appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer the charge of attempting to commit murder.
Police Prosecutor, Munilall Seetaram, told the court that on July 8, Dushaj came home and a heated argument ensued between the two.
He said that both Smith and Dushaj were armed with weapons. The prosecutor said that Smith got the upper hand and stabbed Dushaj once to the abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital and later discharged.
After hearing the facts Smith’s reputed husband told the magistrate that he did not wish to offer any evidence against her. The magistrate asked if he understood the gravity of the offence.
The magistrate instructed Dushaj to enter the witness box and to give a sworn statement, stating that he did not want to continue the matter.
After entering the witness box he was questioned by both the prosecutor and the magistrate.
“Were you threatened, or given any form of inducement to say that you didn’t want to continue the matter?” the man answered in the negative. The matter was discharged and both Smith and Dushaj were placed on a bond to keep the peace for one year.
The 24-year-old Station Street, Kitty, resident was stabbed once in the abdomen by his reputed wife.
After taking the injured man to the hospital, the reputed wife had initially told hospital officials that her husband’s friend was the person who stabbed him.
However, officials started to question the reputed wife since she started acting very nervous. Upon further questioning she admitted to stabbing Dushaj.
According to the woman, she and her husband had an argument over a female friend who had started to live with the couple a few weeks ago. The woman said that this move angered her husband and he constantly caused a rift between the two.
