Team to play in Regional One-Day series before U-19 World Cup in N/Z
By Sean Devers in Jamaica
Opening batsman Trevon Griffith and fast bowler Keon Joseph were yesterday named in a 20-man West Indies Under-19 squad to participate in this year’s senior Regional One-Day competition from late October in Guyana.
The squad which is expected to be encamped in Guyana at least 2 weeks prior to the Regional competition will then be trimmed to 15 for the 2010 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.
The 18-year-old Griffith, an attractive left-hander from DCC, scored the first century in the TCL Three-Day competition to finish with 406 runs. Although Griffith only managed a single half-century and 89 runs in the 5 One-Day matches, his entertaining batting gained him many fans in Jamaica.
Although again affected by injury the 17-year-old Joseph picked up 8 wickets from 3 matches in the 3-Day format including a 5-wicket haul against T&T and 11 in the One-Day competition and like last year in Barbados, was easily the fastest bowler on show in the 6-team competition.
The squad was picked from performances in both the 3-Day and One-Day competitions here with the emphasis being on limited overs format.
Jamaican Andre Creary, who injured his groin while on duty with the West Indies Test team last month, missed the entire competition but as was expected, the talented right-hander who played in last year’s Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia, was named in the squad and is tipped to be named Captain.
Barbados fast bowling all-rounder Jason Holder is expected to be Creary’s deputy while 16-year-old Barbadian opener Kraigg Braithwaite, who was also in the West Indies Test squad last month, has been included despite an ordinary series with the bat.
Braithwaite is regarded as the region’s most accomplished 16-year-old batsman but many feel his temperament and penchant for playing long innings, is not as yet ideally suited for limited over cricket.
The squad was announced at Sabina Park after Jamaica were presented with both the One-Day and Three-Day TCL Trophies at the presentation ceremony after yesterday’s final round of matches.
Guyanese Alex Amsterdam, who bowled consistent tight spell with his off-spin and played a few important innings with his left-handed batting, was also among those considered for selection.
The West Indies 20-man squad read: Andre Creary, Akeem Dewar, John Campbell, Kirk Harris, Jermaine Blackwood, Patrick Harty, Nicholdon Gordon (Jamaica), Yannick Ottley, Evin Lewis, Yanick Carriah (T&T), Jason Holder, Kirk Braithwaite, Shane Dowrich, Jomal Warrican (Barbados), Nelson Bolan, Kejal Tyson, Kelbert Walters (L/Wards), Keon Joseph, Trevon Griffith (Guyana), Dalton Polius.
