Guyana ended a dismal 2009 TCL Group Regional Under-19 campaign here with a 6-wicket loss against Trinidad and Tobago at the Police ground yesterday in the final round of the One-Day competition to finish only ahead of the Windward Islands on the points table.
Electing to bat first on a good track in humid conditions, Guyana fell for 131 from 46 overs after a resolute 63-run 6th wicket stand between Vice-Captain Royston Alkins (33) and Seon Hetmyer (37*) rescued them from 41-5 in 17 overs. Skipper Yannick Carriah (3-23 from 9 overs), Sachin Boodram (2-4 from 9 overs) and Yanick Ottley (2-15 from 6 overs) did the damage for the T&T.
Trinidad and Tobago, whose only loss in the 6-team competition was to Champions Jamaica, replied with 133-4 in 30.3 overs to finish as runner-up ahead of third placed Barbados who lost to Jamaica in their final game. The Leewards ended in the fourth position. Nicholas Alexis top scored for T&T with 45 from 83 balls with 5 fours and a six and shared in a 4th wicket stand of 75 with Man-of-the-Match Ottley (31*) to see their team to victory with 19.3 overs to spare. Once the in-form Trevon Griffith (9 from 19 balls) missed a big drive and was bowled at 19-2, the South Americans never really recovered despite the 6th wicket partnership.
Griffith and Skipper Anthony Bramble opened the batting for Guyana who yesterday left-out Andre Stoll, injured Herrell Greene and Totaram Bishun.
Guyana lost their first wicket in the 3rd over with the score on 3 when Bramble was removed by pacer Teshawin Castro for a duck while Off-spinner Sachin Boodram, who opened the bowling and began with 2 maidens to Griffith, got rid of the left-hander in the next over.
Alex Amsterdam, who got going with consecutive off-side boundaries off Castro, was run out for 10 when Foo failed to respond to a call for a single and both batsmen ended in the same crease as Guyana slipped to 19-3.
T&T, hunting their 5th title since the competition began in 1998, struck at 33-4 in the 14th when Foo, who has looked a shadow of the pugnacious hitter in Guyana, laboured for 26 balls to score 7 runs before patting a tame catch to short extra-cover off Boodram. The manner of Foo’s dismissal again exposed his lack of mental fortitude in Guyana colours.
Sookdeo pulled Castro for a rare boundary in the 15th over and along with Hetmyer carried the score to 41 before Sookdeo (14) was bowled by left-arm spinner Kissoondat Magnum.
Alkins dropped on 0 and twice on 2, rode his luck and along with Hetmyer revived the position on a rough and fast outfield. Alkins hit Yanick Carriah for a six but was bowled next ball after hitting 2 fours and 2 sixes from 52 balls to leave the score on 104-6 in the 35th over.
Keon Joseph (0) was LBW to Carriah at 104-7 while Ronsford Beaton (11) and Seon Daniels fell in the space of a run to leave the score on 129-9. With Hetmyer unbeaten on 37 from 95 balls at the other end, Antony Adams (0) missed a big swipe and was bowled by Ottley as the innings ended 33 minutes before the scheduled lunch break. By Lunch T&T were 39-1 from 4.2 overs as Lewis, who smashed Beaton for 2 fours in the 2nd over, hooked Joseph to deep square-leg on the stroke of lunch. Aaron Alfred (who dumped Amsterdam for 3 consecutive sixes) was unbeaten on 21.
Following the interval, Joseph and Beaton bowled with genuine pace before Beaton unsettled Alfred (27) and had him caught at slip off a rebound from the Keeper after he had ducked into a quick bouncer off the previous ball to leave the score on 50-2.
Carriah (0) then edged Joseph to the Keeper at 57-3 as the T&T batsmen looked suspect against the short balls. Alexis lofted Adams to long-off with victory 9 runs away before Ottley and Akiel Cooper (0*) piloted their team to a comfortable win.
Joseph finished with 2-20 for the Guyanese who are scheduled to arrive home tonight after one of their worst performances ever at this level since Regional youth cricket was introduced in 1968.
