General Secretary of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), Norris Witter, and member of the People’s Movement, Mark Benschop, have distanced themselves from the fire which destroyed the Ministry of Health building on Brickdam.
At a press conference held yesterday at the Critchlow Labour College, Witter told members of the media that he and Benschop have taken note of the attack by Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, who are suggesting that the duo was involved in the torching of the building.
“We are on record in both the electronic and printed media in condemning that act. We have stated and wish to repeat that Government buildings belong to the people of Guyana and the destruction of Government buildings by whatever means represents a loss to all Guyanese,” Witter said.
He added that the People’s Movement will not be deterred by vile threats and attempts to assassinate its character.
According to Witter, he and his associates have taken a few days off from protesting in order to critically analyze and assess the state of their struggle thus far. However, he added that within the next seven days, they will be revealing a series of activities which will be prosecuted with partners in restoring the rights of the Guyanese people.
When asked if the movement can sustain a prolonged demonstration in fighting for the rights of the Guyanese people, Benschop said that a lot of sacrifices have to be made.
