Promoter, Mark Smith displays the letters allegedly written and stamped by the NDC Chairman yesterday
The war of wits seems to be continuing between the Hydronie-Good Hope Neighbourhood Democratic Council, Chairman Milton Dookie, and promoter, Mark King, whose intentional Emancipation Beach Party was brought to a screeching halt on Saturday by an injunction filed by the Chairman.
The injunction had dictated that the decision to grant permission for the event be quashed on the grounds that the event is unlawful, improper, irregular and was made without and in excess of jurisdiction.
In an earlier interview the Chairman, Milton Dookie had indicated that the injunction was filed by him since he feels the event is lawless and vulgar and that the level of music played on the beach was a noise nuisance to many villagers. In the same breath he had mentioned however that he would encourage entertainment events providing the level of music is moderate.
When asked during that interview, however, if he would allow Smith to host events on the beach he said the injunction is already filed and the judicial council will have to decide that.
Investigations by this newspapers resulted in about ninety percent of the persons spoken to saying that they were not affected by the music. Yesterday, Smith visited this newspaper and provided letters written that were signed and officially stamped before the incident by the Chairman, granting him permission to hold picnics and other entertainment on the beach on Sundays and holidays, providing he obtained the necessary permission from the relevant authorities.
Another letter certified that the Chairman had no objection to Smith hosting a fun day some time ago since he is known to be protecting the beach.
Smith who resides in the said area said that for over 20 months he had applied to the NDC in that area to promote entertainment events on the beach but was always turned down even though he would provide his signed permit given to him by the Sea Defence Council.
When this permit was shown to Kaieteur News it dictated that Smith in June, 2007 was given control of the beach to host entertainment activities by the Sea Defence Council. Smith has however declared that a letter pushed under door dictated that there is the possibility of the same located to be leased to a prominent business figure for tourism purposes.
Smith also provided a recent letter that he claimed that was signed by several villagers attesting to the fact that they were not disturbed by music when entertainment activities are hosted on the beach.
He also argued that if the Chairman was referring to ‘women in swimsuits’ on the beach as vulgarity, then he should also file injunction on all the pageants and other prestigious events at which ladies flaunt their assets in swimsuits of various tastes.
As a result of the injunction, Promoter Mark Smith has lost over $1M in investment he had undertaken to make the Emancipation Beach Party a success.
