IPF/NAPF/FESUPO Pan-American Powerlifting Championships on this weekend
By Franklin Wilson
Reigning Caribbean Powerlifting King in the 82.5kg class Randolph Morgan left Guyana early this morning for Miami Florida via New York to compete at the 12th Pan-American and 7th North American Powerlifting Championships this weekend.
Garnering funds to purchase his ticket proved almost a nightmare for Morgan who was the last of the three Guyanese athletes to leave for Miami.
Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses left on Monday morning while ‘Big’ John Edwards departed over the weekend along with Association President Peter Green and Secretary Gordon Spencer, who was already in the U.S. complete the Guyana contingent. The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation according to Green will take care of the athlete’s accommodation while in Florida.
The airfares around this time of year are always high and this proved to be a challenge for the athletes. Morgan, was finally able to raise his almost US$1,300 yesterday after much running around and the great support of a number of business entities; Kings Jewelry World, Windjammer International Hotel, Becks Trading, BM Soat, CSI Security Service and International Pharmaceutical Agency.
The local and Caribbean champion stated that the challenges he faced in raising the money will only harden and strengthen his resolve to destroy the opposition at this weekend’s championships. Morgan, a member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) did Guyana and himself proud on debut when he blew away the opposition at the 3rd Annual Caribbean Bench Press and Powerlifting Championships which were held in the British Virgin Islands.
Morgan also captured the best lifter award in his category; ‘Big’ John Edwards also copped the best lifter prize in the open 125kg category, smashing records in the process and is the Caribbean and Regional champion.
At the Caribbean Championships, Moses also attended but encountered problems adjusting to his new bench press suit which caused him to fail his attempts which affected his placing overall.
‘Spongy’ as he is familiarly known, has promised to rebound in style this time around and is promising local fans gold medals in Miami. All the athletes have expressed confident in medaling this weekend.
Moses who is competing in the 75kg class will be taking on 8 other lifters and is expected to go into action on Friday, while Morgan will hope to conqueror the 13 other athletes in his category and he will also be competing on Friday.
Edwards, will take centre stage on Saturday and will take on 10 other competitors, among them, lifters from Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, USA, Mexico, Costa Rica and the British Virgin Islands.
Other countries attending the championships, which will also see juniors and women competing, are Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Canada, Cayman Islands, Guatemala, Peru and Panama.
The local senior championships are set for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on October 25. Three (3) North American Powerlifting Officials are expected to be in Guyana from October 22 – 26 to conduct a technical clinic and to run referee’s examinations for certification at the National and international level.
Guyana will host the 4th Annual Caribbean Islands Bench press and Powerlifting Championships next April and to ensure that the local lifters are in the best possible shape, the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport recently handed over a complete set of Internationally recognised weights which was used at the just concluded Claude Charles Memorial / Intermediate and Junior Championships.
