In the 1840s when the plantation owner offered Stewartville for sale, the Millers were among the first to join with other freed slaves who were pooling their resources to buy the land on which they and their foreparents had slaved.
Members of the Miller clan shortly after the unveil the monument. The oldest member is Claude Tait (2nd from left).
On Sunday, their descendants returned to the village to honour their ancestors. The occasion was a family reunion that included a church service at Freedom Congregational Church, Stewartville.
The Millers have since spread across Guyana and many of them have even migrated. The migrants return every two years.
On Sunday, the oldest of the Miller descendants, Claude Tait, 94, was on hand to unveil the monument the family erected in the churchyard.
On previous occasions they erected plaques in the church to honour those of their descendants who had played significant roles in the church, some of them serving as pastors.
New York-based Edgar Henry, whose mother, Iris Henry, nee Miller, up to the time of her death three months ago, was the oldest surviving descendant, coordinated the reunion.
He later joined with his other relatives to unveil the monument.
