Quick reaction by students of the University of Guyana averted what could have been a major fire at the Caribbean Research Library, Turkèyn campus last evening.
According to reports the library was crowded with students who are preparing for examinations when an alarm was raised that the building was on fire.
Pandemonium broke out at about 20:40hrs as the smoke coming from the stairway thickened but swift thinking students ran to the location of the fire and using books and other materials, put out the fire.
The fire started on a pile of books and other materials left of the staircase for discard.
Several police ranks that were in the library studying secured the area and police ranks were summoned.
The fire service was summoned and two tenders arrived on the scene.
While most students on campus did not see any flames they said they were alerted to the strong smell of smoke at the time and even after the fire was put out.
Some suspicions are that the fire was deliberately set in an alleged arson attempt by persons unknown.
