Guyana National Football Team won its first series against Cuba in January 1985. After tasting defeats in previous series (1974), (1976) and (1978) the Land of Many Waters, backed by a partisan and boisterous crowd at the G.C.C ground, won the opening contest one nil courtesy of a Mickey Layne goal to needle the 1938 World Cup finalist.
In the deciding match Guyana playing with tremendous confidence held their opponents to a two all draw an own goal by a Cuba defender and an Adrian Forde header accounted for the goals for Guyana as they won the two matches series on goal difference scoring three goals to Cuba’s two.
The historical squad: Gordon Braithwaite (Captain), Mickey Layne, Adrian Forde, Aubrey Hutson 8 Paul Browne, Gerald Williams (Goalkeeper), Nigel Cummings, Leonard Williams, Marlon DeSouza, Trevor Maxwell, David Kistoo, Richard Alphonso (Goalkeeper), Neil O’Choa, Julian Moe, Elson Hinckson, Shaun Williams, Anthony Williams and Lennox Arthur (Coach).
