After inspecting some 1,108 dwelling premises in the city, more than 150 health defects have been uncovered by the Municipal Public Health Department.
And according to a release issued by the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown, yesterday, the situation has created more than 300 new breeding grounds for mosquitoes in different wards.
Among the areas that were inspected were houses, cottages, tenement rooms, yards and conveniences, common lodging houses and apartments, schools, hair dressers’ premises, stables, cow byres and places of amusement.
The defects, according to the release included: dirty yards, overgrowths, defective water closets, defective kitchen sinks and water pipes.
As a result, more than 150 notices were served to those concerned advising them of the need to remedy the defects and to comply with the by-laws.
The release detailed that “these defects and negative sanitary conditions have the potential to cause enormous public health and environmental problems in the city.
This in term could affect the health of citizens in local communities.”
The council is appealing to residents in the various wards to make every effort to adhere to the city by-laws and to keep their yards and general surroundings clean at all times. Also, the council is encouraging citizens to join or establish community development groups and take responsibility for the state of their communities.
Meanwhile, citizens are being urged to look for the Council’s Health Certificate when using the services of barbers and hairdressers in the city.
In June, the public health department registered 25 such establishments after they were examined by the Medical Officer of Health.
The certificate is awarded to such professionals, after a thorough examination of their premises is carried out thus providing some amount of quality assurance of the service.
