Three organisations have committed to host three major blood drives during the course of this week in order to boost the blood stock at the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS).
These organisations, Continental Group of Companies, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, and Seventh Days Adventists are responding to calls by the Ministry of Health for blood.
The blood drives will be held on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
In this regard, the Health Ministry is urging other companies and institutions to come on board and assist the NBTS in their crisis situation.
The NBTS is however urging regular blood donors to donate blood now.
In a press statement issued to members of the media yesterday by the Ministry of Health, it was noted that the blood bank buffer stock which should have been 170 units per day was down to three units as of yesterday.
“This is a critical situation and we are in urgent need of blood now.
For both regular and potential blood donors, this is a good time to donate blood.
We are grateful to those who have responded to our call throughout the last week. We are also grateful to the corporations and institutions that are coming forward,” the statement noted.
It was noted that at this critical time, the NBTS needs enough blood in order to facilitate any emergency at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
“The choices are clear, we could either ask people to donate blood so we could meet the increased demand at our hospitals or we could ask the hospitals to reduce their services.
The second choice is not an option. The first choice is an imperative. Please help us now,” the Ministry of Health statement added.
Persons desirous of donating blood can do so at NBTS Headquarters, Lamaha Street, New Amsterdam Hospital in Berbice, Suddie Hospital, Essequibo Coast, Linden Hospital and the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
