Battle lines to be drawn on Sunday at Amelia’s Ward
Bakery giants Bakewell has added its bit to ensure that Sunday’s Cycling Fiesta organised by the Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) in association with the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation is a big hit.
Yesterday at their Triumph Head Office, General Manager Rajin Ganga handed over a cheque to Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, co-promoter of the event, which is expected to be one of the biggest cycling activities of the year to date.
Ganga noted that Bakewell over the years has been very supportive of sports and its development as a community builder. He said his company had no hesitation in supporting this activity for Linden, an area that has been supportive of their products over the years also.
“We are very happy to contribute towards an activity that brings together the best riders in Guyana. Bakewell believes that an activity such as this help to build a strong bond of camaraderie among our people, which of course is healthy. I understand that there will be events for the young and old and this is very commendable.”
Apart from the 11 races on the programme, there will be one walk race to feature women 55 years and older. There will also be two open 800m races for both male and female runners.
Cyclists at the senior, veteran, upright and BMX levels will engage each other over varying distances on the Amelia’s Ward circuit. Another exciting race will be the Linden bus drivers against their Georgetown counterparts.
The clash of the day will be the Linden/Georgetown showdown apart from the many individual races, which will certainly see riders from both communities aiming for the top attractive cash incentives.
Major, at an earlier presentation had disclosed that efforts were being made to bring home Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams but yesterday he said they were unsuccessful in contacting Williams who it is understood, is inactive at the moment. Attention has now being turned to Anguilla based cyclist, Andrew Reece. According to Major, they have been in contact with Reece and were expected to confirm arrangements yesterday. Reece will arrive later this week all things being equal.
Western Union’s Bill Express and Church’s Chicken, have already contributed to the event. Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company is also expected to announce their support.
President of RBC Brian Allen disclosed yesterday that arrangements have been on target and he is expecting an exciting time on Sunday.
“We expect to have an action packed day and I know that the cyclists will enjoy themselves along with the very attractive cash incentives we have on offer.
We also have a very large contingent of BMX riders in Linden so we are looking forward to some energetic rivalry in this category.”
