The island of Wakenaam in the Essequibo River might still be “Waiting on a name” but for aspiring nurse Mandy Jairam, Wakenaam means the fulfiller of dreams.
When she won the Miss Diwali pageant at her school back in 2006, she wanted to compete in another pageant, and so she jumped at the opportunity to be part of the second Miss Wakenaam pageant.
Jairam, 18, was crowned Miss Wakenaam on Saturday evening, after giving the judges all the right reasons for a person to visit Wakenaam – it’s beautiful and quiet, with hospitable and friendly people, but most of all “we live like one big family.” She won for herself $500,000 in cash and prizes, including a laptop computer.
A graduate of the Essequibo Islands Secondary School, Jairam, is currently pursuing studies in nursing in Georgetown.
During her one-year reign, she plans to form a youth group to help those in her community avoid the dangers of drug abuse. Jairam told Kaieteur News that she has noticed that a number of teenagers are dropping out of school and end up abusing drugs.
When she will not be busy doing that, Jairam said she will continue to do the things she enjoys, including travelling, having picnics on the beach at Zeelandia, and also helping out in the family business.
