Kirt Brown, who was arrested as a suspect for the Ministry of Health fire, and whose relatives claimed that they could not find after he was released from the police custody, surfaced yesterday claiming that he was never missing.
Brown turned up at Kaieteur News and denied that he was arrested by police as a suspect in the fire.
Instead, he said that he was questioned about his acquaintance with one of the suspects. On Sunday last, this newspaper reported that Brown was one of the suspects in connection with the Ministry’s fire and that his relatives were worried about his whereabouts after he was released from police custody.
His cousin with whom he lived, claimed that she could not find him since his released from police custody.
Yesterday, Brown said that police raided his Lot 45 Norton Street, Lodge home on Tuesday last and arrested him claiming that he was harbouring one of the suspects called ‘Zebby.’
He is claiming also that none of his relatives could have claimed that he was missing as this newspaper had reported. A ‘wicked’ person made that assertion to this newspaper, he added.
Brown also claimed that he never gave a statement to the police and was released from custody without having to post bail.
However, according to senior police officials, Brown was released on Wednesday after he had given police a full statement.
The official further told this newspaper that Brown was picked up because his name surfaced in the Ministry of Health fire investigation.
Brown is claiming that the police are targeting him as a result of a personal issue they have with him.
Since the fire, almost ten persons were arrested, and three of those were subsequently charged.
Police have also launched a massive manhunt for lockup escapees, Kurt Thierens, called “Bage” or “Glasses” of Lot 102 Middle Walk Buxton and Colin Jones, 20, called ‘Bunny’ of Lot 3, West La Penitence.
A female police corporal, who was on duty at the time of escape, has been dismissed from the Guyana Police Force. She appeared in court yesterday and was released on $300,000 bail.
Police Commissioner, Henry Greene, had told reporters that there were no visible signs of a breakout.
A special team from the Tactical Services Unit has been put together to search for the two men and the police were working on the theory that they were removed by some corrupt means from the lockups.
