The twenty-seven junior windball players short-listed to prepare for the 3rd Annual Goodwill Twenty20 International Schoolgirls Tournament slated for August 14-21 in Trinidad and Tobago continued practice sessions yesterday, at the GTU ground on Woolford Avenue.
The National Primary Schools Girls Windball team pose for Kaieteur Sport at the GTU ground yesterday.
The players who’re encamped at the GTU Headquarters is being coached by Edward Cobenna and Basil Persaud with Kenesia Headley, Francine Nichols and Paula Perreira, the females charged with the responsibility of overlooking all activities during the encampment which is expected to conclude today.
Speaking with Organiser Allister Munroe, who is responsible for organising the tour, he said that the whole purpose of the encampment is to get the girls fully prepared to successfully defend the title they’ve won for the past two years, starting in 2007 and following that up with victory last year, both times in Guyana.
Munroe added that the players, who were selected at the conclusion of the nationwide Primary Schools Tournament which ended recently, hail from most of the regions including 3, 4, 5 and 6 and are among the best to emerge from the competition.
Munroe disclosed that the only twenty players will be selected to travel to the Twin Island Republic to participate in the tournament.
“It will be the first time that a Primary Schools team will be on tour and even though our preparations have been hampered by the inclement weather, I still expect them to do well,” Munroe mentioned.
He further stated that the task this year will not be easy since they will be playing away from home for the first time, while inadequate preparations could prove to be a decisive factor.
Meanwhile the players were engaged in a few trial matches with teams captained by Teneisha Cort, Sherica Campbell, Naflana McKenzie and Kattie Ann Punch. Campbell’s XI beat Cort’s XI by 55 runs.
Campbell’s XI batted first and made 184-5 of the allotted 20 overs with the Captain hitting an unbeaten 90, while Latoya Garraway 17 and Tasheema Bacchus 13 were the other useful contributors.
Cort’s XI in reply was dismissed for129 with Cort 38, being the principal scorer. Rohnie Doodnauth added 21.
On Day Two, McKenzie’s XI defeated Punch’s XI by 5 wickets. Punch’s XI was bowled out for 89 with Punch making 46 not out. McKenzie grabbed 5-10 and A. Mickle 3-21.
In their response, McKenzie’s XI reached 90-5 in 17.3 overs. L. Garraway and P. Millington each scored 18.
