Humanitarian Mission 2009

Pandit Sugrim, who is now based at Williamsburg on the Corentyne, arrived in Guyana on Friday to commence the 2009 charitable programme.

This service targets the less fortunate persons, senior citizens and victims of disaster.
Humanitarian Mission 2009 kicked off on Saturday August 1st with the distribution of application forms for areas of need. Saturday’s event was only for the four orphanages in East Berbice – The Alpha Home at Gay Park, the Canaan Home at Port Mourant, the Camal Home for the Homeless at Albion and the Anjuman Orphanage in New Amsterdam.
Pandit Suresh Sugrim signaled that the distribution dates are to be announced via the television stations and newspapers.
The Humanitarian Mission in Guyana commenced in 2005 in Berbice and has been held annually. In 2007, the organisation expanded its service to include the entire Guyana.
It is executed in collaboration with the Guyana Central Arya Samaj and the Berbice Central Arya Samaj.
The Guyana Chapter is headed by Dr. Ramesh Sugrim of Williamsburg, while the Public Relations Officer is Magistrate Chandra Sohan with Pandit Kamal Dhanesar as Secretary.
To date, millions of dollars have been donated in the form of medical expenses, provision of homes, wheelchairs, educational grants, school supplies, food hampers and vouchers in addition to recognising selected mothers and fathers for their contributions. Yesterday Sunday, Pandit Sugrim and his team traveled to the city to identify the needs of Homes/Orphanages in Georgetown and on the West Coast of Demerara.
Later this month, the Mission will host a second blood drive at Williamsburg. This will be done in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
A Memorial Service is to be held for the late Shri Prakash Gossai, who according to Pandit Sugrim, played a pivotal role in the development of the Humanitarian Mission.
A walk-a-ton to address the issue of domestic violence and substance abuse would be held later this month in the Rose Hall Town/Port Mourant area.
Tomorrow, the team is to travel to Pomeroon, accompanied by officials of Food for the Poor. This is the first step in establishing a partnership with that funding agency. The work done by Food for the Poor would be examined and the Humanitarian Mission would then see areas of need that would facilitate a growth in partnership.
In order for Humanitarian Mission 2009 to be realised, the New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir Inc. hosted several fund-raising activities in the United States. These began in July 2008 and concluded last month.
The organisation also survives through the benevolence of some Americans, overseas based Guyanese and other persons. Pandit Sugrim explained that the words, ‘Arya Samaj’ mean a Noble Society and, as such his group is striving to lead by example and try to curb social ills and negative influences.
The New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir, Inc. is not only committed to realising the third principle of the Noble Society which is to learn, to teach and to preach the Veda, but it is also dedicated to enhance the lives of the less fortunate in Guyana irrespective of caste, colour, or creed.
