The Scotia Bank/Berbice Cricket Board Academy opened on Monday last at the Port Mourant Cricket ground, with BCB President Keith Foster reminding the 45 young cricketers that discipline and dedication are the keys to success.
The Academy organised by the Special Events Committee (SEC) is the first of its kind with the aim of nurturing the talents of youths between the ages of 13 to 18, who have been identified as promising talents for the future.
SEC Chairman Hilbert Foster called on the participants to learn as much as they can during the one week programme, since a modern cricketer has to have knowledge about everything on and off the field.
Finance, he opined, was a major hindrance in today’s economic crisis and advised the youths to make sure that the investment in their future is not wasted.
He cautioned them that the BCB wants discipline to be the pillar on which the game is built and that no form of indiscipline would be tolerated at any level.
Foster told the attentive audience that they should count it a privilege as it is the first time they were undertaking such a venture. He praised the sponsor – Scotia Bank – for supporting the Academy.
Coach, Michael Hyles Franco challenged his charges to be prepared to work hard, to listen to every instruction, putting into practice what they will learn.
Hyles Franco’s assistants during the Academy are Level Two Coach, Winston Smith and National Player and Level One Coach, Delbert Hicks.
Chairman of Berbice Cricket Board Junior Selection Committee Leslie Solomon informed that an elite 20-man squad would be selected at the end of the Academy and they would be exposed to more coaching for possible selection to the Berbice Junior teams.
