Kurt Brown, one of the many suspects arrested in connection with the fire at the Ministry of Health, has finally being released from police custody.
According to senior police officials, Brown was released some time on Thursday after he had given police a full statement.
The official further told this newspaper that Brown, who is a resident of Norton Street, was picked up by the police sometime last week. The police were acting on information after his name surfaced in the Ministry of Health fire investigation.
Almost ten persons were arrested, and three of those were subsequently charged.
However, despite police assurances that they have released Brown, relatives are still baffled about the young man’s whereabouts. A relative told this newspaper that Brown has not been seen since he was reportedly released from police custody. This is causing them some worry.
One relative said that they are trying to make contact with Brown, and searching his normal hangouts.
On Monday last, a Ministry of Finance employee and a miner were charged for setting the Ministry of Health on fire. The men, Clayton Westford, 19, of Lot 7 West La Penitence; and Tedenna Bagot, 21, of 32 Second Street, Alexander Village; were not required to plead to the indictable charge of setting fire to a public building. And on Wednesday, South Ruimveldt resident, Keith Ferrier, was also charged for allegedly setting the Ministry on fire.
ACDA activist Archie Poole, along with Former Chief Magistrate, Juliet Holder- Allen, were arrested and questioned in connection with the fire. The former magistrate was placed on $10,000 station bail.
Poole, 60, was charged on Friday for allegedly having a prohibited item while being a prisoner.
Police ranks on July 26, allegedly found Poole with a cell phone in his pants pockets, while he was detained at the Brickdam lockups.
His lawyer argued that Poole was not denying that the phone was his, but the prosecution would have to prove that he was wrong to have a cell phone in the lock-ups.
Poole was arrested on Tuesday last at his Soesdyke/Linden home and detained at Brickdam Police Station.
Following the fire at the Ministry of Health, the police had stated that they had a vested interest in Poole.
The police have launched a massive manhunt for lockup escapees Kurt Thierens called “Bage” or “Glasses” of lot 102 Middle Walk Buxton and Colin Jones 20 called “Bunny” of Lot 3 West La Penitence.
And the female police corporal who was on duty at the time of escape has been dismissed from the Guyana Police Force.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene had told reporters that there were no visible signs of a breakout.
A special team from the Tactical Services Unit has been put together to search for the two men and the police were working on the theory that they were removed by some corrupt means from the lockups.
