Destitute grandmother at wit’s end to support grandchildren
While the primary focus at this time for many parents is on purchasing new school outfits and stencils for their children, it is unfortunately not so for 57-year-old, Dularie Sooklall, of Devonshire Castle, Essequibo Coast.

Mrs Sooklall struggles to maintain herself and her two grandchildren. The situation appears hopeless. The children could eventually drop out of school.
Mrs Sooklall says she has been a mother to both of her grandchildren, ever since they were infants.
She said that her 16-year-old grandson, Hardat Bacchus, would not be attending the 8
th of May Secondary School when school reopens. However, ten-year-old Rohit Lall’s future rests on the promise of assistance from friends.
Ever since Mrs Sooklall stopped receiving public assistance for herself and her 10-year-old grandson, she has been depending solely on the public to ensure both boys’ attendance at school.
She said that it has been tough on her ever since she lost her husband and son two years ago.
Her younger son, Jainin Lall, who is Rohit’s father, is in prison for the murder.
This single parent now performs minimal household chores and sells coconut brooms.
She said that although the public assistance she received up to two years ago for both herself and grandson, was minimal, she made much of it. That same money ensured regular attendance for both of her grandchildren at school.
She said since this year began she stopped receiving any public assistance so Rohit could not attend school.
She was recently forced to sell the only two sheep she was rearing to purchase food for the children.
