The island of Wakenaam in the Essequibo River will come alive this evening as the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce hosts the second annual Wakenaam Night.
The activity is meant to encourage Guyanese to visit other parts of the country, and in this case to experience life on the island of Wakenaam.
For those who wish to attend the event, the Ferry Service leaves Parika Ferry Stelling at 13:00 hrs.
The event takes the setting of a mini-exhibition and fair. The booth displays will be that of food, pottery, jewelry, clothing and the agricultural produce of the island.
Based on last year’s attendance, some 7, 000 persons are expected to attend the event.
The main feature of the night will be the crowning of the second Miss Wakenaam. According to pageant organiser Gary Hinds, eight contestants are vying for the crown.
The contestants will take part in an opening dance and will then compete for the top prize in Talent, Casual Wear, and Evening Wear. They will also be asked a question on their platform and the answers to a final question will determine the winner.
The event will be followed by the annual beach day at Hamburg Beach, just off Wakenaam, on Monday.
