The four children whose mother died in road accident on the Providence East Bank Demerara Public Road last month, have received a significant donation from Indira Sookdeo who resides in Canada.
The donation came in the form of a barrel to Kaieteur News and it includes foodstuff, clothing and school items for the children.
The items were handed over to the grandparents of the children yesterday. Currently, all four of the children, seven-year-old Andre Sandy, five-year-old Anthony Sandy, three-year-old Mark Sandy and one month old Andrew Sandy are in the care of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security Child Care Unit.
The Ministry will eventually place the children in the care of their grandparents, the Comptons, but only if they improve their living conditions in Moruca.
The grandparents told this publication that they are willing to improve their living conditions, as they are currently in the process of rebuilding their house.
Publisher of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall, has said he will give the guardians some of the money from the donations collected from the public to assist in rebuilding the house. The rest of the money will be placed in a trust fund for the children.
Early last month, after dropping off her seven-year-old son to school, Mary Sandy (the children’s mother) was crossing the road opposite the Texaco Gas Station when she was hit by a car, PDD 9467. She died on the spot.
It was reported to this newspaper that Mary had suffered years of abuse at the hands of her husband who had left the couple’s home and never returned until he heard of his wife’s death.
