A 28-year-old electrician from Berbice is pleading with the man who almost cost him his life, to turn himself over to the authorities.
On Monday last, Subash Mohan, of Number 77 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, and a friend were struck down on the Scarbourgh Public Road by a Canter truck.
The driver of the yellow Canter truck, which carried a painted sign ‘H. Nauth and Sons’, sped away from the scene without rendering assistance to the two injured men.
Speaking with this newspaper, Mohan said sometime around 20:00 hours on Monday he was on his way home on his motorcycle when he stopped at a gas station to purchase fuel. While at the gas station, Mohan said he met a friend who began to confide in him about his domestic situation.
Mohan said that his friend threatened to end his own life out of frustration, so he decided to give him a drop home. According to the injured man, while taking his friend home they noticed a vehicle heading in their path.
Mohan said that he tried to swerve out of the path of the coming vehicle but he failed since the vehicle approached them at a very fast rate.
The man added that both he and his friend, the pillion rider, were tossed into the air and hurled some distance from the point of impact.
“De vehicle ain’t even stop; they just continue to drive away like nothing ain’t happen” Mohan said.
The injured man related that after lying on the road for some time, he and his friend were eventually rescued by a taxi driver who happened to be passing the location.
Both Mohan and his friend were picked up and taken to the Skeldon Hospital where they were treated.
However, because of Mohan’s condition he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
He added that he now has a fractured skull, four broken left ribs and a fractured left leg, his pillion rider also suffered broken limbs.
Mohan said on Wednesday, that persons claiming to be relatives of the driver of the canter came to him at the hospital offering to settle the matter.
Mohan said that he refused and requested to see the driver of the vehicle.
However, the persons left without leaving a contact number and have never contacted Mohan or returned to the hospital.
In the meantime, Mohan and his family are calling on the driver to do the right thing and turn himself in.
The matter has since been reported to the Skeldon Police Station and investigations are ongoing.
