Flamingo face Uprising in final, bragging rights & $300,000 at stake
By Franklin Wilson
Who will unshackle the thoughts of defeat and walk away with the title of Guinness Futsal Kings and bragging rights? That question will surely be answered this evening when Flamingo take on Uprising in the final of the Guinness/Georgetown Football Association/Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport/National Sports Commission Futsal competition at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Tonight’s final game will bring the curtains down on weeks of exciting and entertaining rivalry among the club teams in the city and the champion teams in the Ministry of Sports Inter Block competition.
As expected, the Inter Block teams were not up to the standard of the city teams and that became more and more evident as the tournament progressed.
That said however, the attention will be on two of the better sides coming out of this competition which has been well supported by the fans.
Flamingo will start the game as favourites based on their experience at this level and the fact that they were crowned champions as well. While Uprising have not tasted championship glory in this version of the game, they must not be taken for granted as they boast a formidable line up which includes former national stars.
Omali Nassy will spearhead Uprising’s quest for glory and will find able support from Keith Fraser in goal, Terrence ‘Old Head’ Lewis, O’Riley ‘Shot Gun’ Small, Daniel Favorite, Leary Loncke, Dwayne Dickson, Desney Bostwick, Devon Dooker, Colin Clarke, Terrence John and Royston Burgess.
Flamingo’s challenge for another title will be spearheaded by the inspirational and invaluable Leon ‘Zambuly’ Law arguably the top Futsal player in the land. Yaw has been a tower of strength for Flamingo and has carried the lead role in excellent fashion. He is also the competition’s leading goal scorer so far.
Flamingo, while not a star team, have shown the others what TEAM work can achieve, Pele learnt that all too well. Orin Peters, Quincy Bourne, Lloyd Barrow, Gerron Statia, Dwayne Layne, Eon Moore, Delon Watson, Eon Singh, Deon Allen, Lennox Cort, Cordel Dowling and Eon Moore will lend support to their leading soldier, Yaw.
The losing finalist will pocket $150,000. The third place game will see losing semi-finalists Pele and Fruta Conquerors squaring off with the winner taking home $75,000 and the loser, $50,000.
A number of exhibition matches will set the tone for this evening. Exclusive Styles will lock horns with America Street, Guinness Bar oppose Sweet Point, Ministry of Sports face the Media for the second time, Upper Level Barber Shop tangle with Barber Shack, while North East La Penitence engage Albouystown.
