Since the commencement of the Robert Simels trial (former lawyer for Shaeed Roger Khan), Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy’s name has been mentioned by the star witness, Selwyn Vaughn, as acting on behalf of the Guyana Government in providing assistance to the self confessed drug lord, Roger Khan.
This seems to be agitating the Health Minister to the extent where he has now become explosive in his comments to members of the media.
Yesterday, this newspaper sought to get clarification from Minister Ramsammy on the allegations being leveled against him in the US court that he purchased the spy equipment for Roger Khan, but before the question could be completed, Dr. Ramsammy erupted in a fit of anger, slammed his fists on the table and said, “But it doesn’t matter. Each day I have heard rumours about everyone of you (journalists) but that doesn’t make it right. I have stated my case and that’s the end of it. It is the god damn end of it!”
After this, he then stormed out of the Boardroom of the Supply Chain Management Services (SCMS), in High Street Kingston.
Before erupting in anger, Minister Ramsammy calmly told media operatives, “I don’t know what the spy machine is; I don’t know where these things are sold; I have never procured any kind of spy equipment, I have never spoken to anyone about a spy equipment and I certainly wish that after all these years as a professional that I had that kind of money.”
According to the Health Minister, his daughter is currently attending Graduate school in the United States and he wished that she wouldn’t have to borrow a loan in the US to go to school.
“I don’t know what they look like; I don’t know what they’re called; I don’t know how they work and I certainly have had no need to spy on anyone,” Minister Ramsammy said.
Minister Ramsammy said that the headline carried in this newspaper on Friday July 30, 2009, is unfair and libelous to him.
The headline quoted the Co-founder and director of the firm that manufactures the equipment, Pert Meyers, as saying that Minister Ramsammy purchased the spy equipment.
“I think that it is unfair. How the hell do you know that? The headline is libelous. Because I dare anybody, manufacturer or the newspaper owner, to prove that I bought the spy equipment.”
Dr. Ramsammy added that these are allegations, of which he accused the media as providing as facts to the public.
“Do not destroy people’s character, especially people who have worked hard to create a lifestyle that is beyond question. I have served and I have lived a life beyond reproach and that is the fact.”
Dr Ramsammy added that this would be the last time he would address the matter.
On Thursday, Peter Myers told the US Federal Court in Brooklyn under oath that the intercept equipment is only sold to Governments and one set of equipment was sold by the company’s Florida sales office through the Spy Shop in Florida to the Guyana Government.
Myers identified the equipment as an intercept receiver and two laptops that were sold to the Guyana Government.
Meyers also identified Dr. Leslie Ramsammy as the purchaser of the equipment.
Defence attorney, Gerald Shargel, stated that the evidence shows Dr. Leslie Ramsammy authorised the purchase on behalf of the Government of Guyana.
