A man accused of having a forged currency note in his possession and uttering the said currency note was yesterday placed on $50,000 bail, after he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates Court.
It was that Andrew Seebarran 26, of 291 Grove New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, on July 29, with the intent to defraud, uttered one US $100 currency note to David Bacchus knowing the note to be false.
It was further alleged that on the same date Seebarran had in his possession a forged US$100 currency note. He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was represented by attorney at law Debra Kumar.
According to the lawyer Seebarran is gainfully employed as a Service Representative at the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, a position he has held for the past four years.
Kumar explained that Seebarran has no previous convictions, nor is he known by the police.
The lawyer stated that on the day in questioned her client went to Martina’s Cambio, to exchange the currency note for Guyana dollars.
She further told the court that it was only after arriving there that he was informed that the money was a forgery.
The lawyer added that ranks from the Criminal Investigation Department were present at the cambio, and her client tried to explain that he received the money from a dealer on America Street.
He was nevertheless arrested and the vehicle he was driving was impounded. The lawyer made an application for the car to be released, since the car does not belong to Seebarran. The vehicle has no purpose for case, she added.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith did not oppose bail, but told the court that the police had to impound the vehicle since the defendant was taken into custody.
The prosecutor said that if and when bail is granted the vehicle would be released. Seebarran was placed on $50,000 bail and is expected to make another court appearance on September 4.
