Having had a free day on Day 3 (Tuesday) Team Guyana was in the water again.
Both Fabian Binns and Niall Roberts participated in the 100m Freestyle. There were 22 heats, comprising 202 swimmers, in this event.
Fabian swam in Heat 1. He did not have an entry time, but finished in a time of 1:01.05.
Niall entered with a time of 56.00 and finished third in Heat 6, with a time of 55.08 to place third.
Coach Nicholas Fraser reported: “Fabian and Niall took part in the 100m Men’s Freestyle today (yesterday) – Event 19. They both took the day off yesterday (Tuesday) and last night did some visualisations of the race, we went through the common mistakes that they do in the 100m and they slept.
Our work here at the World Championships must be done like clockwork and if we miss the bus or we get held up doing anything we stand a chance of not being able to perform well.
“The 100m Freestyle event in swimming is very similar to the 400m run in Athletics. If one was to compare the times that are done by athletes in the 400m races in Athletics with the times done by 100m Freestyle swimmers, you would see that they both use similar energy systems. So the training for the 100m in swimming is somewhat similar to the training of a 400m runner – in terms of the energy systems to be trained. And the effect of swimming the race on the athletes is similar as well … it is a very tough race to swim.
“Tomorrow (today) our lone female swimmer, Noelle Smith, has her first event – the 100m Freestyle. The boys do not swim again until Friday (tomorrow).”
