Sponsorship apparently procured
The national junior Pan American Games team was scheduled to depart Guyana early this morning for Trinidad and Tobago where they will compete at the prestigious meeting that will be held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
The team had initially identified problems with procuring sponsorship but one member is adamant that the necessary funding was secured after the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport committed to financially supporting the team.
They were expected to depart early Wednesday morning, which would have placed their presence at the meet in time for the July 28 opening. The prestigious junior forum will conclude on August 2. The departure of the national junior team this morning meant that they arrived a day late for the event.
Triston Joseph and Kevin Bailey, who are both part of the team, are already in Trinidad for the meet and as such the association was concentrating its efforts on Okeme Stewart, Roxanna Rigby and Nadine Rodrigues for sponsorship. Pamela Phillips was identified as manager and Lyndon Wilson as coach.
One of the athletes confirmed yesterday that the team was to depart this morning since President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, Colin Boyce could not be reached. He had expressed optimism over their departure.
