Testifying witness in the ongoing Robert Simels trial, Selwyn Vaughn, had told the US court that “Bharrat (meaning President Jagdeo) would not like Roger Khan to talk…but Roger Khan is not that type…because all he had to do when he was held in the US was to talk about his involvement with the Guyana Government and he would have walked right out.
Responding to this the President said, “I’m saying now, let (Roger) Khan speak whatever he knows.”
According to President Jagdeo at a press briefing at Office of the President, yesterday, from the inception he had told the Commissioner of Police that he had an obligation to investigate any breaches of Guyana’s laws.
As it relates to the possible damage the allegations could do to the Government locally and internationally Jagdeo said that there were a lot of allegations but it was up to who believed them.
Jagdeo said that he has never seen the informant but he could not know what “I want” adding that the only information that he had on Vaughn was that he hailed from Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.
He said that he was unaware that the police had any knowledge of the activities of Vaughn while in Guyana.
The President reported that he had instructed the police to write to the United States Government given that they had said that they can’t investigate newspaper reports.
The US Ambassador had responded by stating that at the conclusion of the case the evidence would be made available.
“We still expect that at some point in time the security forces will be privy to all of the evidence being led in the US courts.”
The President said that he had spoken to Dr Leslie Ramsammy. “I asked him were you connected…he said to me that he was not.”
Jagdeo emphasized that the Government of Guyana would never sanction the killing of people or encourage it or work with people that engage in such activities.
He said that when Roger Khan had issued a full page advertisement in the local newspapers that he had helped the government to fight criminals, “I publicly said you tell us which government you were helping.”
According to Jagdeo there was nothing to hide and as such welcomed Khan at anytime to speak about what he knows, “because this government never had any engagement with Roger Khan.”
He said that the government did not engage with any of the groups namely the ‘Buxton Gang’ of the ‘Phantom Death Squad.’
He also pointed out what he noticed as strange the fact that Vaughn said that Ronald Waddell was killed because of his criticism of Roger Khan and the Phantom Squad. Should that be believed then the allegations of the then hostile sections of the media that the government was involved in his death were now rendered baseless, he added.
According to the President, should the statement be credible then Ronald Waddell was a criminal given that Vaughn had linked him to the Buxton Gang of Escapees.
“If you believe what this informant is saying then you have to believe that he was a member of the Buxton Gang and that he was basically in criminal enterprise…that Waddell was a criminal involved in a criminal enterprise.”
He did point out however that the Police have initiated a process to secure the relevant information and at some point in time a criminal investigation will get underway.
“You don’t need a commission of inquiry to go after a criminal act.”
He said that there will have to be credible evidence to facilitate an investigation Jagdeo said. “I don’t go on allegations…criminal matters must be investigated by the police.”
