Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday placed each of four defendants on $150,000 bail.
The accused; Roshan Khatoon, Habib Kabir, Gomattie Bim and Tazim Gafoor were jointly charged with simple larceny. Azimun Mohamed, 47, was separately charged with receiving stolen property, knowing same to be stolen.
It is alleged that some time between July 6 and July 27, the quartet stole $1.1 million worth of seafood from Hope Fisheries, owned by Morris Persaud Gopi.
Mohamed allegedly received $90,000 worth of the same stolen property. All five defendants pleaded not guilty to their charges.
Glen Hanoman, the lawyer representing Khatoon, told the court that his client poses no flight risk, ‘He doesn’t even know where the airport is’.
Kabir of 12G Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, who has two children, had been a security guard at Hope Fisheries for two years. 56-year-old Gomattie Bim had for 12 years resided with Gopi as a live in cook; Gafoor of lot 1 Windsor Forest West Coast Demerara is a licensed seafood importer and exporter and owner of T&R Seafoods, which he operates out of his Windsor Forest residence; 47 year old Azimun Mohamed is a vendor of fresh fish and prawns.
Mohamed was being represented by Attorney-at-Law Rexford Jackson, who was not present in court yesterday.
The Police Prosecutor did not object to bail and added that some of the items were recovered.
Attorney-at-Law Max Hanoman described the situation as a “fishy expedition” The police went on a fishing expedition, he said.
The four accused are to return to court on September 11, while Mohamed, who was charged separately for receiving the stolen property, was set on $75,000 bail and is to return to court August 14.
